If Your a Real DVC Finalist, Please Stand Up

For all of you finalist out there, today is the day you have all been waiting for, the release of your anxiety. I haven't had the luxery of feeling that way, since I already know I've been excluded from the list thanks to what I am calling the "Da Vinci Hoax" aka "Poor Load Balancing". But for the rest of ya's, go ahead and gloat in your glory and let everyone know you made it.

Also, someone forward me a copy of their email so I can post it for all to see. Email it to davincicodequest@gmail.com Thanks!!

And don't forget to check our the next quest we are all participating in called the Eurostar quest. You can find out more about the quest at this blog (yes, I am the publisher of that blog, so join up and let's do another quest together)

tbot, do you mean the 'congrats on registering' email from the 11th? I just noticed mine is timestamped 9:44PM. I don't know the timezone, however, and the closeness in minutes leads me to think yours and mine were sent at (nearly?) the same time.

Regular US mail. and nothing else in the box (well, besides the message inside the cryptex).

Which makes me curious--the rules mentioned 'a screenshot' that would have five codes, one of which would open the cryptex. My keycode was just on the bottom of the box.

At 5/15/2006 8:38 AM, Blogger arttxgirl said...

yea it said you were suppose to get screen shots that is odd have you opened it???

At 5/15/2006 8:39 AM, Blogger pyro@sp said...

My time, I believe, was well before 1:10, but I don't think it was before 1:05. Sorry I can't be more precise; I was paying too worried about clicking in the right place. :D

At 5/15/2006 8:39 AM, Blogger DataMosaic said...

Well, I have yet to get my email, but I received an ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS cryptex in the mail today. YAY!

At 5/15/2006 8:47 AM, Blogger pyro@sp said...

err, that 'paying' shouldn't be there.

Anyway--yes, I opened it. I'm actually geeking out a little--I found the mechanism itself more intriguing than the message. It works just like a barrel-style bike lock (which I'm pretty sure you all know already), what interested me was that the key doesn't have teeth all the way to the end--you only have to know the last two letters of the keyword to open it.

Since I saw that some people had already gotten their cryptex, I hoped against hope that maybe I got one even thought I have a PO Box. (Yes, I found out afterwards about the "No PO Box" rule) I skipped over to the Post Office and opened my box, I had a package slip!! I went to the front desk and gave them my slip wanting to jump up and down with excitement. The Post Office worker rounded the corner with my package, aaannnnnddddd.......... it was a @#$%&*! PHONE BOOK! Aaaarrrgggg, I just want my cryptex, I think I've earned it.

I have recieved no email thus far pertaining to my participation in the Quest on Google. But I just recieved a cryptex in the mail. All I wanted was the cryptex when i started playing the game, but now I'm worried I may not be able to solve the final challenges if they were to be sent through an email address lol anybody else have a problem like this?

BTW: i was hoping the answer to the cryptex would have been a test to open, rather than it just being printed on the box it came in lol

My theory is that since alot of people are getting the cryptexs and no emails according to Official Rules, that maybe everyone is going to get a cryptex as a consolation gift since google was screwed up the day of puzzle. then only the true finalist can log in

Thanks for the updates. I am bummed, as I took too long to finish the last question. I read it wrong - when it said "the answer to the last question..." I thought it meant THAT question, the last one, not the "previous" question. Duh. I thought it was more of a brain teaser - I tried to unscramble "the letters" literally, etc. Finally I figured out they must mean the answer to #2, and I got it, but it was like 1:15 or something. Argh. Good luck to everyone in the finals - please let us know what it's like and what the questions were!

Question: if you look at the one being sold by noblecollections.com (www.noblecollection.com/images/large/NN5335L.jpg) you can see that the inner compartment piece has five notches. Does anyone who got one as a finalist have one like that, or do all of yours have only two notches?

Also: the way to change the code on yours, should you wish to do so. Open it up and look at the ring around the opening. You should see two small flathead-style screws. Loosen them up and you can remove the end ring; changing the code should be self-explanatory from there.

Thank you for participating in "The Da Vinci Code" Quest on Google.

This email is to confirm that you have completed all 24 puzzles within the quest and successfully registered for a chance to participate in the final challenge. Well done!

We will be contacting the 10,000 finalists on Monday 5/15 via email regarding their cryptex shipment. Within that email the 10,000 finalists will also receive instructions on how to participate in the final challenge.

All remaining players who finished the quest will also receive a surprise message via email.

Thank you all for participating in "The Da Vinci Code" Quest on Google and making it such a success. We hope you enjoyed playing.

From the Rules:

ONCE PARTICIPANT FILLS IN HIS/HER GOOGLE ID AND CLICKS "SUBMIT" ON THE PUZZLE COMPLETION FORM, HIS/HER SUBMISSION WILL BE TIME-STAMPED AND WILL BE DEEMED PARTICIPANT'S OFFICIAL PUZZLE COMPLETION TIME ("PUZZLE COMPLETION TIME"). AFTER A PARTICIPANT HAS SUBMITTED HIS/HER PUZZLE COMPLETION FORM IN ACCORDANCE WITH THESE OFFICIAL RULES, THE PARTICIPANT WILL BE IMMEDIATELY DIRECTED TO A SEPARATE CONTEST ENTRY FORM ("CONTEST ENTRY FORM") WHICH THE PARTICIPANT MUST COMPLETE CORRECTLY AND IN FULL BY THE PHASE 1 DEADLINE IN ORDER TO BE DEEMED A POTENTIAL FINALIST. CONTEST ENTRY FORM WILL BE TIME-STAMPED AND WILL BE DEEMED PARTICIPANT'S OFFICIAL CONTEST ENTRY TIME ("CONTEST ENTRY TIME"). THE DETERMINATION OF WHICH PARTICIPANTS ARE DEEMED POTENTIAL FINALISTS ELIGIBLE TO CONTINUE TO THE FINAL PHASE OF THE CONTEST DEPENDS ON HOW SOON EACH PARTICIPANT WHO HAS SOLVED ALL 24 DAILY PUZZLES CORRECTLY SUBMITS HIS/HER CORRECTLY FILLED OUT PUZZLE COMPLETION FORM AND THEREAFTER SUBMITS A CONTEST ENTRY FORM. ONLY THE FIRST 10,000 PARTICIPANTS WHO SUBMIT A PUZZLE COMPLETION FORM (AND WHO THEREAFTER SUBMIT A CONTEST ENTRY FORM) ARE ELIGIBLE TO ENTER THE FINAL PHASE.

It wouldn't surprise me if Google changed the rules to let more folks in with all the problems and glitches they had on that last puzzle. If they are sending cryptex out to folks who aren't finalists, then that would mean they have already changed the rules some - those folks were originally just supposed to receive a "secret email message". (Woo-freakin'-hoo, I just want a cryptex)

At 5/15/2006 12:09 PM, Blogger SandyCat said...

what those rules mean is that your deturmining time for the finals was your "puzzle completion time" ei when you put in your google username and hit submit and that the form after was just to get your info and was only timestamped because you had to fill it out within 24 hours to be eligible. so the form had nothing to do with the time you finished it was just to get your info.

Tekee, having excitement for this quest, for whatever reason, hopefully nothing self degrading one without major consequences, unlike so many other things that are exciting in life.. is a rare and precious thing,. I think that it is a good thing for all of these people to be so excited about the possible chances of winning finalist status. Perhaps its the rpg gamer in me, real life adventure is rare .

At 5/15/2006 12:44 PM, Blogger Sean said...

Nedra,

I receive the following message when I go to the site:

The Final Challenge

If you're one of our finalists, congratulations! In order to reach the end of the Quest and be rewarded with untold riches you must quickly and correctly complete the Final Challenge. However, you're too early as the Final Challenge has not begun yet.

The one to complete the Final Challenge in the least amount of time from start to finish will be the chosen one. On May 19th, the Final Challenge, which is a time trial, will be made available to you for 48 hours. Please note that this is not a race and that you don't have to start as soon as the Final Challenge is released. You can begin whenever you like during the 48 hours, but prepare well, for once you start there is no turning back. The player who completes all five tasks with the least cumulative time, not the first to complete, will be the chosen winner.

The Da Vinci Code is in theaters worldwide May 19th. Visit the official movie website at www.SoDarkTheConOfMan.com.

Click here to get theaters and showtimes.

"Final Phase. Finalists will be mailed via U.S. postal service, for scheduled delivery by May 18, 2006, a limited edition Cryptex replica and a screenshot of 4 codes (the "Finalist Prize")."

The slash, I don't think you should give up "hope" until after the 18th according to that info I posted from the official rules. Just because people are getting them now, does not mean they are all done mailing them. I would be concerned about the email you get before giving up.

I agree with MistressRoninS - the excitement rush of this silly little game is pretty cool and something I am going to savor! You just don't get this every day - at least not in my boring little world!

not_so_dark--what's your plans for adding the missing teeth? I'd thought of using a bent paper clip or similar--perhaps plumbing solder on a short length of copper wire would work?

Hey - talk about viral marketing. I mean just on this blog, just up until now, there are 167 posts, all about the same thing. All of us are on pins and needles to find out if we A - got a cryptex, and B - are a finalist. All we can think about right now is The Davinci Code. And do any of us have any doubts as to what date the movie opens?

And this is just one of (the best one of, BTW) hundreds of blogs and forums devoted to a stupid game. Somebody was a marketing genius when they thought of this.

Now - I've got to walk to the mailbox for the fourth time today to see if the mailman has arrived :-)

Well I did not get one. Not today at least. I had been on top of the quest all the way down to the last day. Had an unplanned meeting, and... Well.... you guessed it. At 5/15/2006 1:35 PM, Blogger ewey6 said...

anyone confident that they made it, and did not get one today? to lend hope to those of us on the wall...

At 5/15/2006 1:40 PM, Blogger Jennifer D. said...

I'm betting that, like it says in the message about the final game, it didn't have anything to do with "when" you hit submit, just how long it took you to actually do the puzzle(s). I wish we had some clarification if they did the timing off of just the final puzzle or your cumulative time on all 24. But I really don't think that it was based on clock time.

At 5/15/2006 1:40 PM, Blogger Synch said...

Ewey6, I was done within 4 minutes of the final puzzle release, but given the subsequent confusion, was not really confident I'd made it until the mail arrived today. Now with all the confusion about the cryptices, I'm still not sure ;)

Well, not_so_dark said that his/her time was 1:28... and I believe mine was somewhere around 1:30...and I didn't get my cryptex yet. So maybe she was one of the last finallists. Or maybe I'll get mine tommorrow. But somehow I doubt it. I don't know, maybe it's just my pessimism.

I'm pretty sure they can't just change the rules and send a cryptex to everyone who completed all 24 puzzles. If they did, anyone who threw up their hands and walked away after trying to get in that last day would have a legitimate legal complaint, i.e. I WOULD have kept trying if I'd known that EVERYONE was going to get a prize.

Besides, the logistics of manufacturing and mailing tens of thousands of additional cryptices would be rather daunting, as well.
