Finalist Post

If you made it as a finalist you can use this post to comment on phase 2.

By the way, I think we can all agree this contest came down to some manner of luck rather than knowledge or skill. Even though I didn't make it as a finalist, due to technical difficulties on Google's part, I still enjoyed playing and discussing the quest.

Good Luck to all of the finalists!!

I doub't this means anything at this point but here it is. I am sure they will go back and look at time submissions. And since my original submission errored, I am doubtful of actually being a finalist. But, keep trying to re-register if you didn't get the following screen. Maybe you'll get lucky.

If you want to play one of the puzzles again but noticed that you can't, try this link from Sagron (Thanks!!)

I didn't see it either. I got the first screen, entered my gMail account and got the second screen and filled out all my information. But I never got anything to confirm that I was a finalist?!?!?!?!

I am thinking I made it, but right now, I don't know for sure. I completed the puzzle very quickly and then it asked me for my log in ID, which I put in, then I was taken to another page and asked for my address, phone number, etc. It said to give a number where I can be reached between 2 and 4 pm on May 26th. Then it said my registration was received and complete, or something like that. I didn't get any error messages or anything. I guess right now all I can do is weait, and see.

Does anyone know how many registered users are still playing the quest?
are my chances 10,000 in 1 billion or 10,000 in 100,000 ?
just wondering.

No clue when they finished, but notifications are going to be around the 15th.

I guess Google got flooded
I had a lot of problems getting to the registration section
.. After I finished at about 1:04, I kept getting all kinds of error messages. I had to keep trying although I finally solved.
At about 1:15 even got the message that the quest had ended.
--so after all was said and done, I finally got in after trying till about 1:20
I don't know how the 10,000 works out but I heard a lot of people had problems getting the congrats page.
I saw about 4 different types of error messages,
So we shall see.
After many attempts, the registration page appeared, but that didn’t help my time stamp.
Oh well, no sour grapes here... It was all fun. I would really like to get a cryptex; it would be cool to have.

googlefact - how do you know that you are not one of the finalists? one of my friends finished the contests at 1330 EST and was able to register.

About the Google error screen - I can't believe that they had to make that go live today ... Even if the page refreshes by itself, I get the error.. uggh!

Just because you could register does NOT mean you are a finalist. You won't find out until they notify you.

I beat the game but and registered so I should be a finalists. I also went back and re-registered to make sure I did get in and it did say that I've already completed the registration. I did have an error the first time I played so I had to re-start the game. By then I already knew what the answers were so I finished the last puzzle in mere seconds. wouldn't that be great if they measured just the second attempt:)

I FINALLY MANAGED TO GET REGISTER AFTER UNSUCCESSFULLY TRYING TO GET TO GAME ON AOL. I KEPT CLICKING ON MY LINK THAT I HAVE USED THRU THE WHOLE GAME AND GOT A GOOGLE ERROR. AS SOON AS MY LAST ICON TURNED BLUE I WAS TRYING TO DO LAST PUZZLE AND IT WOULDN'T GET ME ANYWHERE. TOO MANY PEOPLE TRYING??
MY DAUGHTER CAME HOME AND SUGGESTED USING THE INTERNET EXPLORER TO GET TO GOOGLE AND IT WORKED. WE BOTH GOT TO PUZZLE AND GOT REGISTER. PROBABLY NOT IN TIME. BUT I JUST WANTED TO DO LAST PUZZLE AND SEE IT THRU TO THE END. GOOD LUCK TO ALL WHO WIN. IT WAS GREAT FUN.

ok so this is straight from the rules:

"Finalists will be mailed via U.S. postal service, for scheduled delivery by May 18, 2006, a limited edition Cryptex replica and a screenshot of 4 codes. One of the included codes will open the Cryptex. Inside will be a scroll with instructions on how to access the Final Puzzle Challenge online."

So aparently if the post is slow getting to you, then your chances are shot. Anyway hope this helps. the rules also say that finalists will be emailed letting them know they made it before May 18. So we will have no idea till then.

You know what made ME crazy?? The final question said "The answer to the last question is an anagram". I wasn't sure what phrase I was supposed to find the anagram of because I thought it meant "The answer to the FINAL question"...

It should have read, "The answer to the PREVIOUS question is an anagram" not LAST QUESTION.

Considering their mailing it via US Postal Service I doubt the cryptex's contain the layer of glass with chemicals in it that would destroy the contents.

At 5/10/2006 12:19 PM, Blogger Pox said...

Wasn't it vinegar inside the codex? Hardly dangerous. But I agree I doubt it contains such. The ones I looked at to purchase don't have glass vials either. But they function as they should in relation to keeping items secure. No one expects them to create the replicas down to every detail described in the book.

Could the "contest has ended" screen coincide with the time that 10,000 people had already registered?
I think people who registered AFTER 1:15 (eastern) or so had no trouble. I'm wondering if it's because there was no chance at all for them and by then Sony, google and other companies realized they should remove the notice so they could still collect personal information. I'm speculating because it's strange that some people actually weren't given a chance to register. Any ideas?

You have to look at the rules. It says that the finalists will not be notified until may 15th. I don't see anyone who made it listed here is a link to the rules for more info

The pic of the webpage is correct, I got that when I finished filling out the form

From the looks of it, if you don't get the form in just after completing #24, you may be SOL.

In the rules, towards the end of the Phase I section, there is a phrase that indicates the finalists are the first 10,000 people to fill out the "Puzzle completion form".

It also says that prior to 5/18/2006 the finalists will be mailed instructions (and probably a "cryptex"), and other stuff.

Either way, it has been fun..

Good luck to all the finalists!!

At 5/10/2006 2:31 PM, Blogger Tekee said...

Well... When I finished the puzzle, I was directed straight to the entry form (name, address, zip, phone#). I never got a "puzzle completion" form as is mentioned in the rules????

At 5/10/2006 2:37 PM, Blogger GinaLouize said...

Hi all,
I completed the puzzle fairly quickly. I'm in PST, so as soon as my clock hit 10am I started the puzzle and I finished w/in a couple minutes. I was pretty confident I had done well. I filled out the Puzzle Completion Form, but haven't gotten an email yet w/ the other form.
From the rules:
"AFTER A PARTICIPANT HAS SUBMITTED HIS/HER PUZZLE COMPLETION FORM IN ACCORDANCE WITH THESE OFFICIAL RULES, THE PARTICIPANT WILL BE IMMEDIATELY DIRECTED TO A SEPARATE CONTEST ENTRY FORM ("CONTEST ENTRY FORM") WHICH THE PARTICIPANT MUST COMPLETE CORRECTLY AND IN FULL BY THE PHASE 1 DEADLINE IN ORDER TO BE DEEMED A POTENTIAL FINALIST."

So I'm not so sure anymore...

At 5/10/2006 2:46 PM, Blogger Sagron said...

The "Puzzle Completion Form" was the puzzle itself, the redirected form was the one where you filled in name, address, etc.

At 5/10/2006 2:46 PM, Blogger Dea della Luna said...

What exactly is the "Puzzle Completion Form"??

At 5/10/2006 3:07 PM, Blogger allyson said...

I believe the puzzle completion form is the form with the single field asking you for your google ID. The Contest entry form is the one with your name, address, phone number etc.

At 5/10/2006 5:15 PM, Blogger Tekee said...

Right...I never got the single field asking for my Google ID...Just the one contest entry.

At 5/10/2006 5:17 PM, Blogger Tekee said...

Whatever, I just want a Codex. Probably will have to get gouged for one on e-bay!! I dont know though, I finished my entry form at about 1:03 ET.

At 5/10/2006 5:23 PM, Blogger Jackie Honikman said...

that's right - the offical clocked time was just measured by when you entered your Google ID at the end... it has nothing to do with the form other than that you have to complete the form by the 11th to finish registration. I got my error message after I filled out the whole form... but that shouldn't effect my "time"

At 5/10/2006 5:38 PM, Blogger Tekee said...

But it never asked me to enter my Google ID?

At 5/10/2006 5:46 PM, Blogger The Slash said...

That's probably because you were already logged into your Google account. Maybe it kept the session cookie and logged you in automagically?

Interesting that all people in the UK can still complete the puzzles and have until midnight to submit the registration form. There is no 10,000 limit here. Everyone who completes all the tasks is getting entered in the prize draw. However is a shame we do not get chance to win a cryptex.

The module's text changed to

If you enjoyed the Quest, then you won't want to miss The Da Vinci Code movie, in theaters on May 19.
Does that mean I am not a finalist? "We hope you had fun" is written in explicitly past-tense.

I got the following message when I go to http://www.google.com/davincicode

Congratulations! It appears that you have received our message and have completed all 24 puzzles. In order to reach the end of the Quest and be rewarded with untold riches you must quickly and correctly complete the Final Challenge.

The one to complete the Final Challenge in the least amount of time will be our chosen one. Beginning at 1pm EDT on May 19th, the final challenge, which is a time trial, will be made available to you for 48 hours. You can begin whenever you like, but prepare well, for once you begin there is no turning back. The player who completes all five tasks in the shortest amount of time will be declared the winner.

I'm not sure that this means anything or not. I didn't receive an e-mail, I just went to that page.

At 5/11/2006 12:34 PM, Blogger BXCellent said...

http://www.google.com/davincicode is a static page. The actual html is a page called final_puzzle_too_early.html, so I'm guessing its the page that the scroll in the Cryptex will take you to.

I haven't received an email yet, despite posting at 1:08 EDT. Could have been too late.

I'm wondering how many people were playing this game.
