The trick to the restoration challenge is to work from the inside out leaving a few of the outer pieces to save you at the end since they are all clumped in the middle. David Yang created an algorithm to solve the restoration challenges using a depth first search, but he will not be posting the source until after the quest is complete. His blog can be found here.
